Artist's Description
I photographed this Matilija poppy in the UC Davis Arboretum, where a few bushes grow by the lake. Romneya coulteri , common name Coulter's Matilija poppy, is native to southern California and Baja California. In this photograph against a dark background, the orange color of the center of this flower is slightly desaturated. The delicate wrinkled surface of the petals pop against black.
