Description
I spent a couple of days in the Eastern Sierras photographing these interesting geological formations. The Tufa of Mono Lake originated underwater. Calcium-rich freshwater coming from springs at the bottom of the lake mix with the lake water, rich in carbonates. As the calcium comes in contact with the carbonates in the lake, a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in calcium carbonate, or limestone. The calcium carbonate precipitates around the spring, growing a tufa tower
